Montmartre is the hilltop district in the 18th arrondissement, known for the Sacré-Cœur basilica, steep cobbled streets, artists’ squares and small cafes. It is one of the closer parts of Paris to Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG), but its hills and narrow streets make arriving with luggage harder than it looks. This guide covers the options for the journey and what to see once you arrive.

Private transfer from CDG to Montmartre

A private transfer drops you as close as vehicles can reach your hotel or apartment. This matters on Montmartre’s steep and sometimes stepped streets, where dragging a suitcase from the Métro is tiring. The fare is the same wherever you stay on the hill, and the price covers the whole vehicle.

Meeting your driver at Charles de Gaulle

Charles de Gaulle has three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2 (split into halls 2A to 2G) and Terminal 3. A free automatic shuttle, the CDGVAL, links the terminals and the train stations, so tell us your airline and terminal if you know them. After you collect your luggage and walk out of the arrivals hall, your driver will be waiting with a sign showing your name. If you cannot spot them for any reason, call or message us straight away on WhatsApp or +33 6 67 33 32 67 and we will guide you to the right door.

Because we track your flight number, a late landing does not mean a missed driver. If your plans change a lot, such as a cancelled flight or a different airport, let us know as early as you can.

By train: RER B and Métro

From the airport you can take the RER B to Gare du Nord, then continue by Métro or on foot towards the hill. Lines 2 and 12 serve the district, with stops such as Anvers, Abbesses and Lamarck–Caulaincourt. The Abbesses stop sits deep underground and has a lot of stairs, so check which stations have lifts if you use a wheelchair or a pushchair. Montmartre also has a funicular that climbs beside the Sacré-Cœur, and a standard Métro ticket is accepted on it, according to the travel guides we checked. Confirm this with the operator before you rely on it.

What to see in Montmartre

  • Sacré-Cœur basilica: at the top of the hill, with free entry to the basilica itself and wide views over Paris from the steps. Guides list daily opening from the early morning until late evening, but check the official site for current hours. Shoulders and knees should be covered inside.
  • The dome: climbing it needs a separate ticket and a spiral staircase of around 280 steps with no lift, so it is not suitable for everyone.
  • Place du Tertre: a small square close to the basilica where portrait artists and caricaturists have worked for decades.
  • Clos Montmartre: described in guides as the oldest working vineyard in Paris, a short walk down the hill.
  • Museums, cabaret and side streets: the Musée de Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge on the boulevard de Clichy at the foot of the hill, and quiet lanes with bakeries and cafes.

Staying in Montmartre

Many visitors choose a hotel or apartment on the hill for the atmosphere. The trade-off is the climb: some streets are one-way or pedestrian, and stairs are common. Hotels at the foot of the hill, near Pigalle and Anvers, are easier for luggage but a little less quiet at night. Whichever you choose, send us the full address and the number of suitcases so your driver can plan the last stretch.

Arriving tips

  • Check the walking route from the drop-off point to your door before you travel.
  • Arrive in daylight if you can, because the streets are easier to read.
  • Wear sturdy shoes: the cobbles and steps are uneven, even for short walks.

Combining Montmartre with the rest of Paris

Montmartre is a short ride from the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe, so it works as a first stop after landing. See our guides to the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe.

Night arrivals and the return journey

  • Night-time surcharge: a surcharge applies to transfers between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am. It is always stated and confirmed in your booking, so there is no surprise on the day.
  • Going back to the airport: for a flight, we recommend being collected at least 3 hours before departure. For a train, allow 2 hours. If you tell us your flight time, we will work out the pick-up with you.
  • Delays: we monitor your flight or train number, so a delay moves your pick-up and does not cancel it.

Why book a fixed fare

After a flight, a known price and a driver waiting with your name is worth a lot. Piyo Cab has been running transfers around Paris since 2008 and is approved by Transport in France. Use the fare calculator for your exact group size, or message us on WhatsApp with your flight number and we will confirm the fare.
